He was born in Westlock, Alberta Canada on July 6, 1943. He is the eldest of four.

When he was 12 he moved to Edmonton and completed junior and senior high school there. For grade 12 and first year of Arts he went to the juvenate in Edmonton.

He went to novitiate in 1962 and took his first vows on August 22, 1963.

He then went to Holy Redeemer College in Windsor, Ontario and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1965.

He was sent to study theology in Aylmer, Quebec with the Sainte-Anne de Beaupré province.

He was ordained in September 1968 and completed his licentiate in 1969.

From May until September he worked in a rural parish as the temporary pastor then went to St. Alphonsus, Edmonton to be the assistant pastor until 1975.

From 1981 to 1987 he was appointed the rector of the provincial house and from 1990 to 1998 he was rector of Clement House, Edmonton.

He was elected to the provincial council in 1990 and from 1993 to 1996 served as the vicar provincial.

He also worked with the Edmonton Catholic School Board as a counselor and teacher from 1976 to 1979. In 1981 he earned a doctorate in psychology.

From 1983 to 1991 he was an assistant professor at Newman Theological College and in 1989 he was also appointed an adjunct professor at St. Stephen’s United Church Theological College.

From 1985 to 2000 he was the director of the Redemptorist Centre for Growth, a counseling and spiritual direction centre in Edmonton. In September, 2000 he was asked to become the Secretary General of the Congregation. He held this post until his election as General Consultor in 2003.
