Joseph Patrick Dorcey, C.Ss.R. Province
of Denver – USA -------------------------------------------------- Fr.
Dorcey was born in Wayne, Nebraska, USA on September 30, 1953, the fourth
of nine children, son of Joseph M. Dorcey and Patricia A. (Tighe) Dorcey,
both now deceased. He
attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Wayne, Nebraska for his elementary
education. From
1967-1971 he studied at the Redemptorist minor seminary, St. Joseph’s
Preparatory College, in Edgerton, Wisconsin. He
attended Holy Redeemer College in Waterford, Wisconsin, a Redemptorist
liberal arts institution, with a major in philosophical studies, from
1971-1972 and 1973-1976. He
made his novitiate in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, at Immaculate Conception
Novitiate, in 1972-1973, professing his first vows on August 5, 1973. He
professed perpetual vows on August 21, 1976. He
did his theological studies at Mt. St. Alphonsus in Esopus,
New York from 1976-1980. He
was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1979, at Holy Redeemer College,
Waterford, Wisconsin. From
1980-1994 he was assigned to the Vice-Province of Manaus, Amazonas,
Brazil. He served in the parishes of Manacapuru
and Coari, primarily
in the ongoing mission to the people in the rural communities. He also
served as the pastor of a parish and director of the formation house for
students of theology in Manaus for two years. From
1995-1998 he served as an associate pastor at St. Alphonsus parish in
Chicago, Illinois, USA. From
1999-2002 he was assigned to the Region of Nigeria, West Africa. He served
briefly as an associate pastor in one of the parishes in Lagos and then
as the director of student formation for students of philosophy and theology
in Ibadan. In
2002-2003 he was called to Rome to help with preparations for the XXIII
General Chapter and to work on web site of the General Government. In
December 2003 he was elected by the General Council to serve as Secretary
General during the 2003-2009 sexennium. In
November 2009, during the XXIV General Chapter, he was elected by the
newly elected General Council to serve as Secretary General until September
15, 2010. On March 29, 2010 the same General Council elected Fr. Dorcey
to continue in this office until the election of the next General Government. |
