Vice-province of Asunción – Paraguay

He was born in Asunción, March 15, 1950, the eldest of six brothers, the sons of Enrique Palmiro López and Carmen Olmedo de López.

He attended the Redemptorist primary school of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Asunción and did his secondary education at the Redemptorist Minor Seminary in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, until 1967. In 1968 he began his novitiate in Tibagí, Paraná, Brazil and made his First Profession on February 1, 1969.

From 1969 to 1972 he studied philosophy at St. Alphonsus College, Suffield, Connecticut, USA, where he was finally professed June 25 1972.

From 1972 to 1976 he studied theology at Mt. St. Alphonsus, the Redemptorists Major Seminary in Esopus, New York.

He was ordained a priest in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Asunción, Paraguay on June 12, 1975.

From 1976 to 1980 he was attached to the Redemptorist Minor Seminary in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, where he was professor, formator of the Paraguyan students and prefect. During this time, especially in 1976 and 1977 he helped in parish missions in the then Vice-Province of Campo Grande, Brazil.

During the second semester of 1980 he attended CETESP, a course for formators in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 1981 and the first semester of 1982 he was formator for the students of philosophy in the Redemptorist Seminary of St. Clement at Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. At the same time he was in charge of Youth Ministry in the Archdiocese of Curitiba.

From 1983 to 1985 he studied moral theology in the Higher Institute of Moral Science at Madrid where he acquired his Licentiate. Having returned to Paraguay in 1985, he was formator of the students of philosophy and taught moral theology in the National Seminary of Paraguay.

From 1986 to 1989 he was the formation director of the students in Asunción, at the same time giving classes in moral theology and doing pastoral work in the Vicariate of Santa Anna of which he was in charge. During the triennium 1990-1993 he was pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Asunción. From 1991 to 2003 he was continually engaged in lecturing on morals and ethics especially in the Alphonsian Institute of Moral Science for the Laity founded in Asunción in 1991.

He was Vice-Provincial Superior of Asunción for nine years: 1986-1995. He was also President of the Conference of Religious of Paraguay from 1990 to 1995.

From 1996 to 2001 he was pastor of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Asunción.

He was once again elected Vice-Provincial of Asunción for the 1999-2001 triennium and for the 2002-2004 triennium. However, in October 2003 he was elected to serve as Consultor General of the Congregation. He is in Rome since December 9, 2003.
