Enrique López, C.Ss.R.
Vice-Province of Asunción – Paraguay

Fr. López was born in Asunción, Paraguay on March 15, 1950. He is the oldest of six brothers, the son of Enrique Palmiro López and Carmen Olmedo de López (deceased).

He did his primary education in the Redemptorist school Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Asunción, followed by his secondary studies in the Redemptorist minor seminary in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil. After concluding his secondary education in 1967, he entered the Redemptorist novitiate in Tibagí, Paraná, Brazil in 1968.

On February 1, 1969 he made his first profession at Tibagí, Paraná, Brazil.

From 1969 to 1972 he studied philosophy at Saint Alphonsus College, Suffield, Connecticut, USA.

He was finally professed in the Congregation on June 25, 1972, in Suffield, Connecticut, USA.

From 1972 to 1976 he studied theology at the Redemptorist seminary Mount Saint Alphonsus in Esopus, New York, USA.

He was ordained a priest on July 12, 1975 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Asunción, Paraguay.

From 1976 to 1980 he was a professor in the Redemptorist minor seminary in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil and a formation director for the Paraguayan students and Prefect of Students. During this time, and particularly in 1976 and 1977, he took part in Redemptorist parish missions in the then Vice-Province of Campo Grande, Brazil.

During the second semester of 1980 he did the CETESP course for formators in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 1981 and the first semester of 1982 he was a formator in the Redemptorist seminary of “St. Clement” for those studying philosophy in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. At the same time he was also responsible for Youth Ministry in the Archdiocese of Curitiba.

During 1983-1985 he studied Moral Theology in the Higher Institute of Moral Sciences in Madrid, Spain, where he received his Licentiate Degree.

He returned to Paraguay in the second semester of 1985 and was once again a formator of the philosophy students in Asunción. Here he began to give classes in moral theology in the national seminary of Paraguay.

From 1986 to 1989 he continued as formator of the philosophy students in Asunción. He also gave classes in moral theology and was responsible for the poor mission area of Santa Ana, in Asunción. In the triennium 1990-1992 he was pastor of Most Holy Redeemer Pariah in Asunción.

He was professor of moral theology in the national seminary of Paraguay from 1991 to 2003 as well as in various other Institutes, including the Catholic University of Asunción. He gave lectures on subjects related to Christian ethics and moral theology in the Alphonsian Institute of Moral Sciences for the laity founded in Asunción in 1991.

For three consecutive triennia he was Superior of the Vice-Province of Asunción: 1986-1989, 1990-1992 and 1993-1995.

He served as president of the Conference of Religious of Paraguay from 1990 to 1995.

From 1996 to 2001 he was pastor of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Asunción.

He was again elected Superior of the Vice-Province of Asunción for the triennium 1999-2001 and 2002-2004. In October, 2003 he was elected a member of the General Council of the Congregation and has been in Rome since December 9, 2003.

In November 2009 he was reelected as General Consultor and Vicar General of the Congregation.
